Ahmedabad Man Arrested for Allegedly Raping Woman on False Promise of Marriage, Hiding Existing Marriage

A 21-year-old woman from Ahmedabad’s Makarba area has accused a man of repeatedly sexually exploiting her by falsely promising marriage while concealing that he was already married, police said.

According to the complaint lodged with Sarkhej police, the accused, identified as Vijay Jayarambhai Bavaliya, was known to the woman’s family and often visited their home to meet her elder brother. Over time, the two became close and entered into a relationship.

The woman alleged that the accused proposed marriage and repeatedly assured her that they would soon marry. She claimed that six to seven months ago, he persuaded her to enter into a physical relationship on the basis of this promise. Trusting him, she consented.

However, the complainant alleged that the accused continued to have sexual relations with her on multiple occasions, often when her family members were not at home, despite her objections.

She further alleged that on February 7, the accused again had sexual relations with her despite her refusal. In March 2026, after missing her menstrual cycle, she informed him about her condition. The accused allegedly provided her with a pregnancy test kit, which confirmed that she was pregnant.

According to the complaint, the accused initially continued to assure her of marriage but later began avoiding the issue. The woman said she subsequently visited his residence and discovered that he was already married and had a child.

When confronted, the accused allegedly refused to marry her and instead asked her to terminate the pregnancy. The woman later informed her mother and aunt, following which the family approached the police.

Based on the complaint, Sarkhej police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to rape and obtaining sexual consent through deceit, including a false promise of marriage.

Police have launched an investigation and are recording statements of the complainant, her family members and other witnesses. Officials confirmed that the accused was arrested later in the evening.
