A section of an under-construction railway overbridge near Adas village in Gujarat’s Anand district collapsed on Saturday, triggering concerns over construction safety and quality standards.
The incident took place at railway crossing number 250 between Vadod and Adas railway stations, where the Vadodara Gati Shakti Unit is overseeing the construction of the overbridge.
According to initial reports, the span between two main pillars suddenly collapsed and fell to the ground. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported as there were no workers or vehicles beneath the structure at the time of the incident.
The bridge was being built using pre-stressed girder technology, commonly employed in railway overbridge projects. The collapsed portion reportedly included a girder resting on pier caps, which are reinforced structural elements designed to transfer the bridge’s load to its supporting pillars.
The exact cause of the collapse has not yet been established. Railway officials, police personnel and local authorities reached the site soon after the incident and began assessing the damage. Technical experts are expected to conduct a detailed investigation to determine the reason behind the structural failure.
The incident also attracted a large number of residents from Adas village. The overbridge project, which has been under construction for some time, is considered an important connectivity link for the region.
Authorities have ordered an inquiry into the collapse, and further details are expected once the technical investigation is completed.
