A 50-year-old computer hardware dealer from Ahmedabad became a victim of cyber fraud, losing ₹95,000 to scammers posing as customer support.
Dhaval Bachubhai Shah, who runs ‘Mit Computer Services’ on Ashram Road, was trying to book a delivery trip through the Rapid app for a printer on October 7. After a failed delivery attempt, he searched online for a customer service number and called it.
The person on the other end sent him an APK file named ‘Customer Support.apk,’ urging him to download it. After downloading and sharing his screen during a payment process for just ₹1 via Google Pay, his phone was compromised.
Shortly thereafter, without any OTP verification, ₹95,000 was transferred from his Bank of Maharashtra account to an unknown person’s account. Realizing he’d been scammed, Shah immediately contacted the cyber help line at 1930 before filing a complaint with the Isanpur police station. Authorities have since registered the case and are investigating further.
How It Happened
- Shah booked a trip through Rapid for printer delivery.
- Contacted customer support found via Google search.
- Downloaded malicious APK file that compromised his phone.
- Unauthorized transfer of funds occurred within minutes.
