The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning to launch a trial Parking Area Management Plan (PAMP) in the Gurukul and Walled City areas. This move follows recommendations from the High-Level Committee on Urban Planning.
AMC’s 2023 Parking Policy identifies several busy zones with high parking demand, including Gurukul, Walled City, Prahlad Nagar, Mithakali Junction, Ashram Road, and 120 Feet Road. Special strategies may be used in these areas to manage parking better.
Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani said the goal is to improve traffic flow by redesigning how parking works on city roads and identifying major roads that must stay clear.
The new parking plan includes:
- Dividing the city roads into three zones based on parking demand:
- High-demand roads: Major commercial and mixed-use areas.
- Medium-demand roads: Residential and semi-commercial zones.
- Low-demand roads: Inner roads and highways with fewer parking issues.
Other steps:
- Marking parking zones clearly.
- Regulating parking with time and vehicle limits.
- Charging for parking in busy areas.
- Encouraging public-private partnerships (PPP) to implement the plan.
- Linking parking with public transport to reduce vehicle usage.
- Setting speed limits between 30–60 km/h based on the road type and nearby land use.
- Ensuring safe pedestrian crossings in high-speed zones.
These changes are meant to support better traffic flow, improve safety, and promote sustainable travel across Ahmedabad.
