In a major crackdown on drug smuggling, customs officials at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, have seized over 1 kg of high-value hydroponic cannabis from a passenger arriving from Bangkok.
The seizure was made on the night of April 4 after a VietJet Air flight from Don Mueang International Airport landed in the city. During routine screening of hand baggage, officials grew suspicious of an Indian passenger and carried out a detailed check of his luggage.
During the inspection, four vacuum-sealed packets were found hidden inside the bag. The packets contained a green substance which, upon testing, was confirmed to be hydroponic cannabis weighing 1.107 kg.
The entire consignment has been seized, and the passenger has been arrested under relevant legal provisions. Initial findings indicate that the drugs were being smuggled into India via an air route, pointing to a possible international network.
Authorities are now investigating the intended recipients and trying to trace the larger smuggling racket. Further probe is ongoing.
