Authorities at Ahmedabad airport have seized more than ₹22 crore worth of smuggled gold in 2025. In the most recent case, Customs officials caught a passenger arriving from Jeddah carrying 1.30 kg of gold worth ₹1.62 crore.
Customs officials said smugglers are trying new methods, so surveillance has been increased. Suspicious passengers are closely watched and checked, often leading to gold recovery.
The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) reviews passenger travel patterns and issues alerts to Customs. As smuggling attempts rise, the airport has added two new advanced baggage-scanning machines, taking the total to seven across different sections.
