Air pollution in Ahmedabad spiked on Sunday evening, with Raikhad logging an alarming AQI of 283 — the highest in the city. Rakhial was the second most polluted area, recording an AQI of 259.
The city’s average AQI stood at 211, placing Ahmedabad in the ‘poor’ air quality category. Elsewhere in Gujarat, Ankleshwar reported the highest pollution levels with an AQI of 236, followed by Surat at 191 and Gandhinagar at 113.
According to standards, an AQI between 201 and 300 is classified as ‘poor’, 301–400 as ‘very poor’, and 401–500 as ‘severe’. Prolonged exposure to air quality in the ‘poor’ band can lead to respiratory discomfort, particularly among vulnerable groups.
Officials caution that pollution levels may rise further as winter deepens.
