The Surat police on Thursday arrested the president of the Surat District Cricket Association (SDCA) for allegedly forging the signatures of his business partners to obtain a mortgage loan of Rs 2.92 crore, which he later defaulted on, officials said.
The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) had registered a case last year against SDCA president Kanaiyalal Contractor (82), a partner in a construction firm, following a complaint by his late brother’s wife, who is also a partner in the business.
According to police, Contractor forged the signatures of his sister-in-law, Naynaben, and her late husband, Hemantbhai, to create a fake power of attorney. Using this document, he allegedly secured a loan of Rs 2.92 crore and siphoned off the money for personal use.
While he repaid part of the amount, he defaulted on nearly Rs 67 lakh, police said.
Contractor had approached the Gujarat High Court and the Supreme Court for anticipatory bail, but both courts denied him relief. Following this, the crime branch arrested him. The investigation is ongoing.
