Tension flared outside Ahmedabad’s Metropolitan Court on Tuesday when a mob allegedly assaulted Rohan Soni, accused in a hit-and-run near the Jhansi ni Rani BRTS in Nehrunagar.
According to a media report, Soni was being escorted to court when several people surrounded and attacked him. Officers quickly intervened, rescuing him from the crowd before presenting him in court.
The case stems from Monday’s early morning incident in which two Jamalpur residents, Akram Altaf Qureshi (22) and Ashfaq Jafar Ajmeri (35), were killed after their scooter was hit by a speeding car. The crash sparked public outrage, with locals accusing the driver of reckless driving and demanding strict action.
Police sought five days’ remand to investigate the circumstances and collect evidence, but the court granted two days’ custody.
A senior officer said, “We are investigating whether others were involved and seeking time to trace the vehicle’s movements prior to the crash.”
The accused will remain in police custody until the completion of the remand period, after which he will be produced in court again.
