A woman from Ahmedabad has been booked for allegedly submitting a forged school leaving certificate to police in an attempt to show her son as a minor and secure the legal protections available to juveniles in an attempted murder case.
The accused’s son, a resident of Ramrajyanagar in the Ramol area, had been absconding for nearly a year after allegedly attacking a friend with a knife on October 24, 2025. Police said the assault was so severe that the victim suffered serious injuries and required immediate medical treatment.
Acting on a tip-off, Ramol police recently arrested the accused from his residence. During questioning, he reportedly stated that he was 19 years old, following which he was formally arrested in the attempted murder case.
However, the following day, his mother approached the police station and submitted a school leaving certificate claiming that her son was a minor at the time of the offence.
Police became suspicious after noticing discrepancies in the duplicate certificate. Preliminary scrutiny suggested that the date of birth had been altered to make the accused appear a year younger than his actual age.
Further verification with the school revealed that the original leaving certificate had earlier been reported lost and a duplicate copy had been issued. Investigators found that the birth date mentioned in the duplicate document had been tampered with.
School authorities reportedly confirmed that the certificate had been manipulated. Based on the findings, police concluded that the accused’s mother had allegedly altered the document to obtain juvenile status and related legal benefits for her son.
Ramol police have now registered a separate case against both the accused and his mother for forgery, submission of false documents and misleading investigators. Further investigation is underway.
