A 22-year-old woman from Ahmedabad has filed a police complaint accusing a former colleague of creating a fake Instagram account in her name and posting morphed images to allegedly defame and harass her after she rejected his repeated advances.
According to Ramol police, the complainant, a resident of Vastral, alleged that the accused, identified as Sanjay Vishwakarma, persistently contacted her through phone calls, WhatsApp messages and social media platforms despite her refusal to enter into a personal relationship with him.
The woman and the accused had previously worked together at a hearing clinic in Ahmedabad, where they became acquainted through their professional interactions. The complainant alleged that after November 2025, Vishwakarma began expressing interest in a relationship and repeatedly attempted to contact her.
Despite repeatedly rejecting his advances and blocking him on WhatsApp and Instagram, she alleged that he continued reaching out through different phone numbers, including those belonging to his workplace and relatives.
According to the complaint, the accused later created a fake Instagram profile and used it to communicate with the woman’s mother. Through these interactions, he allegedly obtained details about the family’s residential address. The complainant and her mother subsequently blocked the account after discovering its identity.
The matter came to light on May 24 when one of the complainant’s friends informed her about an Instagram profile that closely resembled her original account. After reviewing screenshots shared by friends, she allegedly discovered that a fake profile using a name similar to her genuine Instagram handle had been created.
Police said the complainant alleged that the account featured edited photographs in which her face had been superimposed onto semi-nude images. The fake profile allegedly followed her relatives and acquaintances and shared the morphed images through Instagram stories.
The woman further alleged that the posts tagged both her fiancé’s Instagram account and the accused’s account, while also displaying their mobile numbers, creating the impression that the profile belonged to her.
According to the complaint, the posts were intended to tarnish her reputation and cause embarrassment among family members, friends and relatives. She alleged that the accused resorted to such actions out of resentment after she refused to pursue a relationship with him.
Based on the complaint, Ramol police have registered a case against Vishwakarma under relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act and other applicable laws related to cyber harassment, identity misuse and defamation.
Police said screenshots of the alleged fake account and related social media posts have been collected as evidence. Further investigation is underway.
