AHMEDABAD: In a shocking turn of events, a local jeweller discovered that one of his employees had allegedly stolen gold jewellery worth ₹1.7 crore from his showroom. The incident unfolded at Gravity Shopping Mall, where the accused woman worked for almost a year.
According to police reports, the theft occurred on Monday afternoon while the showroom owner, a 40-year-old resident of Krishnanagar, was away for lunch. He left the store in the hands of his manager and other employees.
Upon returning around 5 PM, he learned from staff that an ornament was missing from one of the trays. They only reported this after a customer left the store. When he checked CCTV footage, he was taken aback by what he saw.
“I watched her taking gold items out of cupboards and hiding them in her clothes,” he said. “She gathered her bag and simply walked out.” The footage showed her leaving around 4:30 PM under the guise of an emergency.
The jeweller’s alarm increased when attempts to reach her via phone were met with silence; her mobile was switched off. A subsequent inventory check confirmed that over 1.2 kg of jewellery—including chains, rings, mangalsutras, pendants, earrings, lockets, and watches—had vanished.
Police have officially registered a case and are actively searching for the woman.
