The Food and Drug Regulatory Authority in Vadodara has permanently cancelled the licence of a medical store in the Navayard area for repeatedly violating rules related to the illegal sale of psychotropic and codeine-based medicines.
Officials said strict action was taken against M/s Shivani Medicine due to the serious health risks associated with the misuse of such drugs, including addiction, respiratory problems, mental health disorders, and even death.
During multiple inspections over the years, authorities allegedly found the store selling psychotropic medicines such as Nitrazepam and Alprazolam, along with codeine-based drugs, without valid medical prescriptions. The first violation was reported in November 2019, after which the shop’s licence was suspended for 30 days. In 2021, officials again detected the illegal sale of medicines, including PB-REX Cough Syrup and BESCODEX, prompting further action.
During the latest probe in 2026, the department recorded several serious violations, including the unauthorised sale of codeine-based and psychotropic medicines without prescriptions, illegal trading of five categories of medicines including PB-REX and BESCODEX, and failure to submit satisfactory responses to departmental notices.
Authorities said the repeated violations posed a major threat to public health, following which the medical store’s licence was permanently revoked.
