As summer temperatures soar, several parts of Ahmedabad are set to face a 10-day reduction in water supply due to repair work on the main Narmada canal.Beginning Thursday, residents across five AMC zones — West, Central, North, East, and South — are likely to experience a 10% to 15% cut in water supply during morning and evening distribution hours.
The disruption comes as Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited undertakes repairs on the damaged reinforced concrete lining of the main Narmada canal, which supplies raw water to the Kotarpur Water Treatment Plant.Officials said the Kotarpur plant, which normally treats around 1,100 MLD of water for nearly 170 distribution stations across the city, will receive reduced raw water supply during the repair period.
The estimated shortfall is expected to be between 50 and 60 MLD per day.Areas likely to be affected on the western side include Paldi, Chandkheda, Sabarmati, Vadaj, Navrangpura, Naranpura, Vasna, and Motera, while large parts of the North, Central, East, and South zones on the eastern side may also witness reduced supply.
A senior AMC water operations official said water levels have already been regulated in anticipation of the repairs. For the next 10 days, raw water pumps will run at full capacity, while borewell water will be used at distribution points to supplement supply instead of relying solely on gravity flow.
Ahmedabad’s daily water demand stands at around 1,700 MLD across seven zones, with the Kotarpur plant alone supplying nearly 1,100 MLD.
Civic authorities have urged residents to use water judiciously until normal supply is restored after the repair work is completed.
