Gandhinagar: A local journalist is in custody after being accused of extorting over ₹1 lakh from a woman in Gandhinagar district. The incident, which has drawn significant attention, involves a series of threats and demands for money.
The woman reported that on December 10, 2025, three men arrived at her hut near Kalol, claiming to be journalists. They recorded a video featuring liquor pouches inside her home and threatened to make the footage public if she didn’t comply with their demands.
Initially, they took ₹40,000 from her, insisting they’d return every month to collect more. According to her account, just two days later, two of the same men returned along with two others who also claimed to be journalists. During this visit, they extracted an additional ₹25,000.
The harassment didn’t stop there. The very next day, one of the accused came back alone and collected another ₹15,000. In total, the woman estimates she’s handed over more than ₹1 lakh since the ordeal began.
This case highlights ongoing issues around journalistic ethics and exploitation within vulnerable communities. Local authorities have named three other individuals linked to the extortion scheme but have not yet made further arrests.
