A trader from Shah-e-Alam in Ahmedabad lost ₹1.37 lakh after downloading a mobile app offering free international TV channels, in a suspected cyber fraud case.
According to a complaint filed at Isanpur Police Station, Khalid Ali Chejara, who runs a medical store, saw an ad for an app called ‘TV World’ on Facebook reels on April 1. The app claimed to provide free access to global TV channels, which led him to download it.
Police said that when he used the app the next day, his phone was likely hacked. Soon after, he started receiving alerts of multiple transactions, with money being deducted from his bank account.
Before he could react, ₹1.37 lakh had been withdrawn in parts.He then deleted the app and reported the fraud to the National Cybercrime Helpline (1930).Later, he filed a complaint at Isanpur Police Station against unknown persons.
Police have registered a case and started an investigation.Officials believe the app may have contained malware to access users’ banking details.
They have advised people to avoid downloading apps from unknown sources and to be careful while clicking on suspicious links on social media.
