The Navrangpura police have registered a case against a 25-year-old man from Rajkot for allegedly sexually exploiting his cousin over several months on the pretext of marriage and later cutting off contact after getting engaged to another woman.
The accused, identified as Jay Parmar, was booked following a complaint filed on Friday by a 21-year-old woman from another district, who had shifted to Ahmedabad in April 2025 to pursue professional baking courses.
According to the police, the woman was staying at a paying guest accommodation near Commerce Six Roads when the accused, her maternal aunt’s son, began contacting her frequently, initially enquiring about her studies. In June, Parmar allegedly proposed marriage. Although the complainant initially objected, citing their familial relationship, the accused allegedly continued to persuade her and eventually gained her trust.
A senior police officer said the accused repeatedly promised to marry the woman and drew her into a relationship. On her birthday, he allegedly visited her in Ahmedabad and reiterated these assurances.
Police said that during August, September and October, Parmar allegedly took the woman to a hotel on Ashram Road, where he had physical relations with her on multiple occasions, again assuring her that he would marry her.
The incident came to light after the woman returned to her hometown on completing her course and later learnt that Parmar had recently got engaged in Rajkot. When she confronted him over the phone, he allegedly refused to honour his promise and asked her to stop contacting him.
Following this, the woman informed her parents and uncle and subsequently travelled to Ahmedabad to lodge a complaint at the Navrangpura Police Station.
Based on her statement, police have registered a case against Parmar under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rape and breach of trust.
“We have recorded the complainant’s statement and initiated the medical examination process. Hotel records mentioned in the complaint are being verified, and efforts are on to trace and arrest the accused,” the investigating officer said.
