Ahmedabad Police register murder–suicide case against nephew of Congress MP

Ahmedabad police have concluded that the death of a 30-year-old woman, who was shot with her husband’s licensed revolver before he turned the weapon on himself, was a case of murder followed by suicide.

The incident took place between 10.30 pm on January 21 and 12.12 am on January 22 at a flat in NRI Tower near Parijat Bungalow in the Bodakdev area. The deceased have been identified as Rajeshwariba Gohil (30) and her husband, Yashkumarsinhji Gohil (35), nephew of Congress MP Shaktisinh Gohil. The couple had been married for just two months.

According to the inquest and investigation findings, Yashkumarsinhji allegedly shot his wife in the back of the head inside their bedroom using his licensed revolver. He then called the 108 emergency service. On arrival, ambulance personnel declared Rajeshwariba dead. Shortly thereafter, Yashkumarsinhji allegedly shot himself in the head with the same weapon, resulting in his death.

An accidental death case was initially registered at the Vastrapur police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. As per procedure, the probe was later taken over by senior officers, including the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad city.

Post-mortem examinations were conducted by a panel of doctors at the Civil Hospital in Asarwa. Medical reports stated that the cause of death in both cases was shock and haemorrhage due to head injuries caused by firearm discharge.

Investigators confirmed that the revolver used was legally licensed to Yashkumarsinhji, with the licence issued in Bhavnagar district. Police ruled out accidental firing, noting that the trigger requires deliberate pressure to discharge. It was also found that the weapon contained only two rounds, both of which were fired during the incident.

“Based on forensic evidence, post-mortem reports and technical examination of the firearm, it is evident that the husband shot his wife and subsequently died by suicide,” a senior police officer said.

Following the completion of the inquest, police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Arms Act, 1959, against the deceased husband. Further procedural investigation is being carried out by the Vastrapur police under the supervision of senior officers.
