Jewellery worth ₹1.15 lakh was stolen from a Maninagar flat after two boys allegedly slipped in through an unlocked door late at night. The theft came to light when the Ahmedabad Crime Branch informed homeowner Jay Modi, 35, that they had detained one of the suspects along with the stolen ornaments.
Modi, a branch manager with a financial firm, had been out of town since November 17, while his wife was staying with her parents in Kankaria. He returned on November 24, when police arrived and alerted him to the break-in.
12-year-old suspect admits to theft
Officers brought a 12-year-old boy from Rabarivas, near Hirabhai Tower, to the flat. In Modi’s presence, the minor confessed that he and another boy from the same locality entered the house around 11 pm on November 20 through the unlocked main door, went to the bedroom and opened an iron safe containing gold jewellery belonging to Modi’s mother.
Jewellery recovered
Upon checking the safe, Modi found the following items missing:
- A white-diamond gold ring (3g) worth ₹30,000
- A red-and-green gold ring (3g) worth ₹30,000
- A black-beaded gold mangalsutra (15.9g) worth ₹55,000
Police said the total value of the stolen items is ₹1.15 lakh.
Case registered; second minor being traced
Maninagar police have registered a theft case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. As both suspects are minors, action will proceed under the Juvenile Justice Act. Statements of family members and witnesses are being recorded, and efforts are underway to locate the second boy and check for similar thefts in the area.
