Four people — three labourers and an engineer — were killed when a speeding truck crashed into a road roller on a highway overbridge in Gujarat’s Sabarkantha district shortly after midnight on Wednesday, police said.
The incident took place near a hotel close to Motipura industrial area. According to the FIR filed at the A Division police station, the truck rammed into the road roller that was carrying out repair work on the Udaipur-Ahmedabad National Highway.
The victims, who died on the spot due to the severe impact, were identified as engineer Asim Majmudar, a native of West Bengal, and contractual workers Somabhai Nayak, Bhemabhai Nayak and Raghubhai Nayak, all from Mahisagar district. The roller driver, Sahed Babulal, sustained injuries.
The complaint was lodged by Somabhai Nayak’s son, who said the family had been working on highway repairs for a year. While most members returned home that night, his father and a few others stayed back to fix potholes.
Police have booked the absconding truck driver under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including causing death by negligence, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving, and endangering life, along with applicable provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
