A couple from Ranip has been duped of ₹35 lakh by four people who allegedly promised to secure them permanent residency in Canada.
According to the Ranip police, the victim, Vishnu Patel, who works at a hardware store, was introduced to Ashwin Patel, a Canada-based resident originally from Ranip, through his mother-in-law in 2023. Ashwin claimed to be an agent who helps people settle abroad and offered to send Vishnu and his wife to Canada for ₹70 lakh.
Ashwin later introduced Vishnu to his daughter Suvarna, who assured him that the immigration process had begun. The couple handed over five cheques of ₹5 lakh each, totaling ₹25 lakh, followed by additional payments, bringing the total to ₹35 lakh.
However, Ashwin later claimed that immigration rules had changed, delaying the process. When the couple began questioning him, he and his associates stopped responding to calls and messages.
Realizing they had been cheated, Vishnu lodged a complaint with the Ranip Police Station. Based on his complaint, police have registered a case against Ashwin Patel, his daughter Suvarna, son Jigar, and associate Suraj Prajapati for fraud and cheating.
