The Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Police have filed a case after an 18-year-old girl from Lambha reported that an unidentified person created a fake Instagram account in her name, uploaded morphed and obscene content, and made indecent remarks involving her and her family members.
According to the complaint, the incident came to light on September 6 when the girl’s sister received a follow request from an Instagram profile named ‘muskuu1221’. The account used the complainant’s photo as its display picture, carried a derogatory title, and contained obscene references.
The fake profile had also listed her sister’s mobile number with the caption “Is number pe call karna” (“Call on this number”) followed by an offensive emoji. It displayed several photos and reels of the sisters, allegedly taken from their genuine social media accounts.
“When her sister confronted the account holder, they sent vulgar and abusive messages about her, her sisters, and her mother,” police said.
The complainant, a Class 12 student, lives with her parents and two sisters in Lambha. Her father works in a private firm in Aslali, while her mother runs a grocery shop. The family said this was not the first such incident — a similar fake account had been created earlier but was deleted after an informal complaint.
The sisters took screenshots of the fake profile and messages before the account was deleted by the perpetrator. They later approached the Cyber Crime Police Station and filed a formal complaint.
Police have registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for online impersonation, obscenity, and defamation. “We are tracing the IP address and device used to create the account,” said officials, adding that Meta has been asked to share account details and login information.
Officials said the act amounts to criminal impersonation and defamation with intent to outrage the modesty of a woman.
