You normally come across influencers on social media sharing their experiences, highlighting public events or promoting others’ brands on a regular basis and that perhaps engages you-being in touch with happenings around, irrespective of whether or not you may attend those, by means of a feed that pops up. But when a design entrepreneur, who is herself an influencer for over seven years, speaks to you with excitement that reveals her win, it is what a true, heartfelt post looks like.
Forty-two-year-old Sweta Desai is ecstatic about winning the UMB Ms India second runner’s up crown in Delhi, following which she has been flown down to walk in the India Fashion Week London for Archana Kochhar’s collection. From teaching ramp-walking, brand promotion and digital marketing to GLS University students to winning this crown where 70 finalists participated, it was “someone’s encouragement saying ‘try out once’ that made me go for it besides the fact that I like doing new things and cannot sit back”, she says.
Looking at the best out of what life gives, Sweta reasons, “I’m glad I tried, it’s because of the crown that I am in London right now.”
Urmimala Boruah organises grand pageants and has close to 10 international delegation licences, per- haps the highest with one person. The entire pageant experience in Delhi was great, Arjun Kapoor and Sara Ali Khan being guests of honour, and judges including Manushi Chhillar, Prajakta Albuquerque, among others. This opens further doors, like next year they will send me for Queen of the World or the New York Fashion Week, Paris Week, and that means new vistas,” says Sweta.
Is there something new she has learnt from this experience, having herself covered several events featuring men and women from various walks of life? “One very important thing I learnt is no matter what ladders you climb and go up, always be humble and nice to people. From the very first day, they make a note of how you deal with people and treat them or what you say and do,” says Sweta.
Revealing her parents’ excitement at the win, she says: “My mom is unable to even sleep now! I was blown away with the excitement of winning the crown but unfortunately my parents were in New Zealand then and could not attend the finals. One call to them and the zing was palpable.” Enjoying photo shoots, something she actually is used to as an influencer, this design entrepreneur is on a roll. Result: some great photographs coming all the way from London!
