Gujarat’s impressions of a safe state somehow falters with the government’s own data, as it reveals a total of 6,619 incidents of rapes in last three years, raising serious questions on the safety of women in Gujarat.
Over the years, the situation seems to be worsening instead of improving. In FY 2020-21, the number of rape cases in Gujarat stood at 2,076, which increased to 2,239 in FY 2021-22, and in FY 2022-23, the number stood at 2,209 cases. Moreover, 95 gangrape cases have also been reported in Gujarat in these three years.
In the last 3 years, Ahmedabad have recorded the most cases, where a total of 1,065 rape cases and 16 gang rapes registered by the police.
In FY 2020-21, 324 rape cases were registered in Ahmedabad, which rose to 370 in FY 2021-22, and in FY 2022-23, it was 371.
The data reveals that the state police have arrested a total of 8,480 accused in this case and 267 are still out of police custody.
Data stated that of the accused, who are yet to be arrested by police, 67 accused are there who have not been arrested since six months of being charged, 63 accused have not been arrested for one year, and 64 accused have not yet been arrested for over two years.
