The Surat Metro project is being developed with several unique engineering features, while also reflecting the city’s identity as the ‘Diamond City’ and focusing on the conservation of nature and heritage.
More Than 3,000 Trees Planted at Dream City Depot
The Dream City Depot, spread across around 20 hectares in Khajod, includes a stabling yard capable of accommodating 24 metro trains at a time. The depot is equipped with maintenance and washing facilities, technical units and an administrative block. More than 3,000 trees have been planted within the premises.Sewage and effluent treatment facilities have also been installed to support water recycling at the depot.
Metro to Run on Electricity Without Overhead Wires
The Surat Metro will use a 750-volt DC third-rail power supply system, eliminating the need for traditional overhead electricity wires and poles. The system is also expected to reduce risks related to power supply during adverse weather conditions, including strong winds and cyclones.
Majuragate to Become First Interchange Hub
Majuragate station, where the two Surat Metro corridors will meet, will become the city’s first interchange station. Commuters will be able to switch between the two metro corridors at the station. The station will also form part of a multi-modal transport network, connecting the railway station, city bus services and the GSRTC depot to make travel more convenient.
85-Metre Girder Highlights Engineering Capability
An 85-metre-long open-web girder has been launched for the metro viaduct between Saroli and Raghukul Textile Market.
The massive structure was built using around 810 tonnes of steel and more than 47,000 nuts and bolts. Launching such a large steel structure in a densely populated urban area is being seen as one of the project’s major engineering achievements.
