As the festive season of Navratri draws near, excitement fills the air in Surat. But there’s a cloud looming over the celebrations.
Despite widespread preparations for this popular event, organizers have shown a surprising lack of urgency regarding fire safety permits. The Surat municipal fire department has issued strict guidelines that must be followed to ensure safety during large gatherings, yet not a single organizer has applied for permission to date.
These guidelines state that any venue exceeding 500 square meters with over 500 attendees needs specific arrangements for emergency exits and crowd control. Furthermore, each person must have at least one square meter of space. Failure to comply could lead to serious penalties from authorities.
Strict Regulations Under Fire Department Guidelines
The fire department’s recommendations include procedures like maintaining clear access routes for fire brigade vehicles and ensuring main stage setups are positioned safely away from crowds.
Other conditions mandate that food stalls can’t be inside the pandals and that emergency exits adhere to minimum height and width specifications. Additionally, firefighting equipment should always be operational and available on-site to mitigate any potential disasters.
A Race Against Time
With only days left until Navratri begins, many anticipate a last-minute rush among organizers attempting to secure their necessary approvals. While preparations advance quickly, it’s crucial that they prioritize these safety measures or face repercussions if caught operating without proper clearance.
The community now watches closely as celebrations loom—will organizers heed the warnings or risk their festivals?
