HDFC Bank showcased multiple Digital Rupee (CBDC) use cases that demonstrate the growing relevance of India’s sovereign digital currency in both everyday consumer experiences and corporate applications. Unveiled last week at an industry forum, these initiatives underscore practical utility, regulatory compliance, and wider accessibility — reinforcing Digital Rupee’s place as a seamless, everyday part of India’s digital economy.
Key Features Showcased
1. Credit Card Reward Point Redemption: Credit‑card rewards will soon be able to be redeemed against Digital Rupee, like any brand‑specific reward vouchers. Customers can redeem across categories such as dining, fuel, apparel, or electronics, with full usage down to the last paise — bringing greater flexibility and transparency to how they enjoy their reward benefits.
2. Gift Vouchers in Customer Promotions: Promotional campaigns will feature Digital Rupee gift vouchers that the Bank can trigger automatically upon a qualifying customer event. Once triggered, the voucher will be loaded directly into the customer’s HDFC Bank Digital Rupee wallet, ready to be spent by scanning any UPI QR code across merchant categories — enhancing customer choice and campaign effectiveness.
3. Digital Rupee Corporate Portal for Employee Allowances & Reimbursements: Organisations will soon be able to self‑serve and disburse meal, fuel, and travel allowances directly in Digital Rupee through their Corporate Net‑banking platform with HDFC Bank. Programmable payouts ensure funds will be used only for their intended purpose, improving compliance while significantly reducing reconciliation effort for finance teams.
4. Wider Discoverability via BHIM: HDFC Bank Digital Rupee wallets will be available on BHIM, enabling customers to make familiar UPI‑style payments directly from their CBDC wallet. This integration meaningfully expands merchant acceptance and everyday convenience for users.
5. Offline CBDC for In‑Flight Payments: Extending CBDC beyond terrestrial connectivity, customers will soon be able to tap their phone on HDFC Bank POS devices onboard flights to pay for food, beverages, or seat upgrades. The feature works even without internet connectivity, ensuring hassle‑free transactions mid‑air.
“Digital Rupee combines the trust of sovereign money with programmability, transparency and stronger controls,” said Mr.Ashish Parthasarathy, Group Head, Branch Banking, Payments, Treasury, Liability Products, Marketing, Virtual Channels and Infrastructure, HDFC Bank. “These use cases address emerging needs around purpose‑bound payments, compliance and auditability across retail and wholesale markets. We remain committed to working with RBI to turn CBDC’s potential into responsible, scalable solutions.”
Commenting on the showcase, Mr.Rajanish Prabhu, Senior EVP, HDFC Bank, said,“The next phase of Digital Rupee adoption will be driven by scale and everyday utility. By bringing CBDC into familiar journeys — UPI, merchant acceptance, rewards, employee benefits and offline payments — we are making it easier for customers and businesses to use the Digital Rupee in daily life, while opening up new possibilities for programmable payments.”
CBDC complements UPI by offering programmability, compliance, and transparency that account‑based digital payments alone cannot provide. From automated corporate disbursements to offline in‑flight payments, HDFC Bank’s latest showcase reflects a deliberate push to embed the Digital Rupee into high‑frequency, real‑world moments across both retail and wholesale ecosystems.
