A 12-year-old girl studying in Class 6 was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her home in Vir Bhagat Singh Nagar, near Sector 7 police station in Gandhinagar, on Tuesday afternoon. The incident has shocked the neighbourhood as police begin probing the circumstances behind the tragedy.
According to officials, the girl lived with her parents — Jagdish Gohil, an assistant in the statistics department, and Jagrutiben, who works in the private sector — along with her 16-year-old brother. Both siblings studied at a local Gurukul school.Preliminary findings suggest that the parents went to work after sending their children to school. Around 1 pm, Jagdish returned home for lunch and left again after a while.Around 2.30 pm, the elder brother left for tuition, locking the house from outside — a routine practice — leaving the girl alone inside.When her mother returned around 4.30 pm, she found one bedroom door locked from inside and got no response despite repeated knocks. Her father was called, and after peeking through the window, he saw their daughter hanging from the ceiling fan. The door was broken open, and she was rushed to Gandhinagar Civil Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.Police have registered a case of accidental death and are awaiting the postmortem report to confirm the cause.
ASI Ratnalal from Sector 7 police station said, “There were no signs of disturbance or dispute at home. We are checking if the child was under any emotional or academic pressure.”
The family had reportedly returned from a trip to Rajasthan the previous night. Neighbours described them as quiet and well-settled, with both children performing well in school. Police said counsellors may be involved to help the family and explore possible reasons behind the incident.
