What does it take to build a successful business beyond a family name, turn innovation into real-world impact, and create opportunities for others? These questions shaped an engaging episode of “Decoded with Chandni Kapadia” at GLS University, featuring Dr. Rahul Mirchandani, Chairman and Managing Director of Aries Agro Limited, in conversation with Dr. Chandni Kapadia, Executive Director, GLS University.
Reflecting on his journey in the family business, Dr. Mirchandani emphasised that leadership and respect must be earned through skills, professionalism and hard work. Sharing a key lesson from his experience, he said, “I had to leave my surname at the door,” highlighting the importance of building an independent professional identity rather than relying on family legacy.
The conversation explored the realities of entrepreneurship, with Dr. Mirchandani encouraging young people to understand the purpose behind starting a business and the value they intend to create. He also discussed how technology, practical training and farmer-led innovation can transform Indian agriculture, highlighting opportunities in agri-tech, water conservation and resource-efficient farming.
Beyond business and agriculture, the discussion touched upon women’s empowerment, workplace flexibility, employee-led entrepreneurship and the importance of allowing young people to pursue their passions responsibly. During the rapid-fire segment, Dr. Mirchandani summed up what matters most for a startup’s growth with an emphatic answer: “Team, team, and team.” He also stressed that trust remains something money can never fix in a business.
One of the most personal moments came when Dr. Mirchandani recalled the advice his mother gave him: “Neither mom nor dad would be there till the end, not a single person would be there till the end.” She encouraged him to reflect on who he would be without his surname, titles or the people around him, and to build an identity that could stand on its own. He shared how this advice continues to guide him, reminding him to ask himself whether he has lived well enough to become his own person.
Through “Decoded with Chandni Kapadia,” GLS University continues to bring accomplished industry leaders and changemakers into meaningful conversations with students. The episode offered an important takeaway: lasting success comes from understanding people’s needs, building trust and creating value that extends beyond business.
