Mumbai Police has reportedly issued a notice to actor Imran Khan, nephew of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, directing him to leave India by October 28, 2026, over his participation in a political protest in Mumbai. The action is reportedly linked to his US citizenship and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status.
What Is the Case About?
On October 10, a protest was reportedly held at Mumbai’s historic August Kranti Maidan by the Kokroch Janata Party (CJP), demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Actor Imran Khan was among those who participated in the demonstration.
Mumbai Police detained several people, including Imran Khan, during the protest. They were later released the same evening.
During the subsequent investigation, authorities reportedly found that Imran Khan holds US citizenship and an OCI card rather than Indian citizenship. The police action is reportedly based on immigration provisions concerning his participation in the demonstration.
Action Followed Complaint by BJP Leader Kirit Somaiya
Former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya reportedly wrote to Mumbai Police Joint Commissioner Manoj Kumar Sharma, questioning how a foreign national could participate in a political protest in India.
Somaiya sought an investigation into the matter and action against the actor. The notice directing Imran Khan to leave India by October 28 reportedly followed these developments.
What Did Imran Khan Say Before His Detention?
Before being taken into custody, Imran Khan told the media that he was attending the protest as an ordinary resident of Mumbai and was not representing any political party or organisation.
He reportedly said he wanted to understand why people’s voices were being suppressed and why their movement was being restricted.
There were also allegations that his partner, Lekha Washington, and actress Zayn Marie Khan were manhandled by the police. These allegations have not been independently verified here.
After his detention, Imran Khan shared a selfie from inside a police van on social media with the caption, “Looks like I’m going on a long drive.”
The reported notice has raised questions about the legal restrictions applicable to OCI cardholders participating in political activities in India. However, the exact legal grounds and the status of the notice would need to be confirmed through official police statements or reliable reports.
