Questions have been raised over food safety and hygiene at the National Institute of Design (NID) hostel in Ahmedabad after students alleged that pieces of glass, plastic and other foreign objects were repeatedly found in their meals.Students claimed they had submitted written complaints to the institute authorities but alleged that no concrete action was taken.
Frustrated by the lack of response, some students photographed the objects and shared the images on social media. They also threatened to go on strike if the issue is not resolved. The complaints have raised concerns over food quality and safety checks in the hostel kitchen. Attempts to contact NID authorities for their response to the allegations were unsuccessful.
Audit flags critical hazards
The concerns were further highlighted by a campus canteen audit conducted on October 3, 2026, by auditors Dilip Thakkar and Bhaskar Sharma. The audit reportedly gave the canteen an overall rating of “Fail — critical hazard detected”.Of the 42 parameters checked, only seven were found compliant, while 27 were marked non-compliant.
The audit also identified 14 active critical hazards, with an average score of just 0.64 out of five. The allegations have once again highlighted concerns over food hygiene in educational hostels and the need for strict quality and safety checks for meals served to students.
