Senior opener Smriti Mandhana has been appointed the new captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, replacing Harmanpreet Kaur as the BCCI begins a new phase for the side.
Mandhana will lead India in both white-ball formats. She has previously captained the team in 18 T20Is and four ODIs. The 29-year-old has been a key member of the Indian side since making her international debut in 2013 and will now take charge in the biggest leadership role of her career.
Harmanpreet Kaur announced her decision to step down as captain earlier on Tuesday through a social media post. The decision came after a review meeting held in Guwahati on Monday with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, women’s team head coach Amol Muzumdar and Mandhana.
