The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced an extension for tax audits and Income Tax Return (ITR) filings for the Assessment Year 2026-27. This decision comes as a relief to business and professional taxpayers who must have their accounts audited under the Income-tax Act, 1961.
Originally, the deadline to file income tax returns was set for October 31, 2026. Now, it’s been pushed back to November 21, 2026. Alongside this change, the due date for submitting audit reports has also been extended by three weeks.
In a recent post on X, the CBDT stated: “The Central Board of Direct Taxes has decided to extend the due date of furnishing of Return of Income… from October 31, 2026 to November 21, 2026.” The new timeline indicates that taxpayers will need to submit their audit reports by October 21 before filing returns.
This adjustment specifically pertains to certain categories outlined in Section 139 of the Income-tax Act. However, it’s important to note that there haven’t been any changes made regarding other filing deadlines.
Understanding Tax Audits
A tax audit is essential for verifying that businesses and individuals report accurate income and expenses. It helps catch inconsistencies within financial records and ensures compliance with tax regulations. For most businesses, if total sales exceed ₹1 crore, an audit becomes mandatory — unless cash transactions represent just a small portion of overall dealings.
