For millions of Indian Railways passengers, a major change in train ticket booking is underway. While much of the transformation is happening behind the scenes, passengers are expected to notice a faster, simpler and more user-friendly booking experience.Indian Railways is replacing its nearly 40-year-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS) with a next-generation platform designed to handle much higher booking traffic, speed up enquiries and improve online reservations.
New PRS for Indian Railways: What Will Change?
The migration to the upgraded PRS has already begun in phases, with the revamped IRCTC website forming part of the transition. The upgrade comes as online booking continues to dominate reserved ticket sales. Between June 2025 and June 2026, 65.08 crore reserved tickets were booked through the PRS. Of these, 57.90 crore, or nearly 89%, were booked online, according to data cited by The Indian Express.
What Is the PRS and Why Is It Being Upgraded?
The Passenger Reservation System is the computerised backbone of Indian Railways’ reserved ticketing network. It manages ticket bookings and cancellations, seat allocation, waitlists, RAC status, reservation charts and passenger enquiries.Introduced in 1986, the system was gradually expanded into a nationwide network. Internet-based railway ticketing was introduced in 2002, after which several upgrades were made to handle the growing demand for online reservations. However, the volume of bookings has increased significantly over the years. The existing PRS can process around 32,000 ticket bookings per minute.
The upgraded system is designed to handle more than 1.5 lakh bookings per minute — nearly five times the current capacity. Its enquiry-handling capacity is also expected to increase sharply, from around 4 lakh enquiries per minute to more than 40 lakh. This includes searches related to PNR status, seat availability, waitlist positions and RAC updates.
What Will Change for IRCTC Users?
Passengers will not necessarily have to learn a completely new booking process. Instead, the focus is on making the existing system faster, cleaner and better equipped to handle heavy traffic.
The new IRCTC beta website, launched in July, has already introduced several changes, according to the Railway Ministry:
Fewer unnecessary CAPTCHAs: The new interface reduces unnecessary CAPTCHAs, pop-ups, flashing graphics and other distractions.
Easier seat availability checks: Passengers can view availability across different classes more conveniently.
Faster checkout: The number of steps required to complete a booking has been reduced.
Simpler repeat bookings: Passenger details can be saved, making future bookings quicker.
These improvements could be particularly useful during periods of heavy demand, when passengers compete for limited seats within seconds.
Could Tatkal Booking Become Faster?
One of the biggest practical benefits of the upgraded PRS could be during peak booking periods such as Tatkal. The new system is being designed to handle sudden spikes in simultaneous booking traffic rather than just increasing capacity during normal hours. There are already indications of improvement. According to IRCTC data cited by The Indian Express, bookings completed within the first three minutes of Tatkal opening increased by more than 5% after the beta website was launched on July 15, when the first and second fortnights of July were compared.Bookings completed within five minutes increased by around 3%, while those completed within 30 minutes rose by more than 2%.
The New System Will Not Be Introduced Overnight
Passengers should not expect Indian Railways to switch off the existing PRS and move everyone to the new platform at once. The migration is being carried out gradually.Dharmendra Tewari, Additional Director General, Public Relations, Railway Board, said the phased migration had already begun and that the new IRCTC beta website was part of the transition. The Railways plans to test the upgraded system under different levels of user traffic before completely shifting away from the existing PRS.This gradual approach is intended to reduce disruptions to a system that operates continuously and serves millions of passengers every day.
What More Can Passengers Expect From the New PRS?
The next-generation PRS is being developed as a more scalable and flexible platform to meet the growing demand for railway reservations.Indian Railways has said the upgraded system will offer a multilingual and user-friendly interface, along with greater capacity.Railway documents on PRS modernisation have also listed features such as seat and berth selection, a fare calendar, multilingual services, a simpler enquiry and booking interface, and the ability to book tickets for a larger number of trains. The backend is also being shifted towards a cloud-enabled architecture, which is expected to provide greater flexibility and scalability as online railway usage continues to grow.
What About the RailOne App?
The digital overhaul is not limited to IRCTC.The RailOne app, launched in July 2025, has crossed 3.5 crore downloads, according to the Railway Ministry.
The app brings several railway services together, including ticket booking, cancellations and refunds, train schedules, live running status, platform and coach information, Rail Madad and food ordering. It also offers AI-based predictions for waitlist confirmation.
According to the Railways, the accuracy of the confirmation prediction has improved from 53% earlier to 94% now.
What Does This Mean for Passengers?
For ordinary IRCTC users, the most visible impact of the PRS upgrade is likely to be a cleaner, faster and more convenient ticket-booking experience.
However, the biggest transformation will take place behind the scenes, with Indian Railways upgrading the technology that supports millions of bookings and enquiries every
