Gujarat University has become the first university in Gujarat to receive autonomous status, giving it greater academic and administrative freedom. The new status will allow the university to take independent decisions, introduce new academic programmes, launch advanced skill-based courses, appoint foreign faculty, and expand its educational offerings.
The proposal for autonomy was strongly backed by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Neeraja Gupta. With UGC approval, the university will now have the flexibility to start off-campus centres and design its own academic programmes without seeking routine approvals.The university has also begun preparations to establish its first overseas campus in Uganda.
The project has already received approval from the Union Home Ministry, and only a security deposit and a few procedural formalities remain before work begins.Gujarat University qualified for autonomous status after meeting the UGC’s strict eligibility criteria, including securing a high NAAC grade and earning a place among the top 100 universities in the national rankings.
University officials believe the new status will help students access international-quality education, modern degree programmes, and global learning opportunities without leaving the state. It is also expected to strengthen the university’s academic reputation and create better career prospects for students.
