Three hospitals from Gujarat have been honoured at the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day celebrations in New Delhi by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) received the award for Excellence as the Leading Government Hospital in Organ Transplantation.
Ahmedabad Civil Hospital was recognised as the Best Non-Transplant Organ Retrieval Centre, while New Civil Hospital, Surat, won the award for having the Best Brain Death Team.According to the state health department, IKDRC performed 597 organ transplants in 2025, including 502 kidney transplants, 86 liver transplants and nine pancreas transplants.
Of these, 380 transplants were carried out free of cost under the PM-JAY scheme, while nearly 34% of the patients were from outside Gujarat.Medical experts credited NGOs for playing a key role in spreading awareness about organ donation and helping convince the families of brain-dead patients to donate organs.
They said every organ donation helps reduce the need for living donors and offers hope to patients suffering from chronic kidney and liver diseases.
