The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning to temporarily remove stray dogs from venues and roads used during VVIP events. Under a new proposal, stray dogs will be caught, housed in AMC shelters during the event and released back at the same location once the programme is over.
The provision is part of a tender issued by AMC’s Cattle Nuisance Control Department on July 29. The tender also includes catching sick stray dogs, providing them treatment at civic shelters and releasing them after recovery.
According to AMC officials, teams comprising two dog catchers and a vehicle will be deployed at VVIP event venues and movement routes. The civic body has fixed the annual base cost of the contract at Rs 30 lakh, while each team will receive Rs 8,000 for an eight-hour shift during VVIP events. The last date for submitting bids is August 10.AMC said it sterilised and vaccinated around 1.98 lakh stray dogs between 2019-20 and 2026-27 at a cost of Rs 19.11 crore.
A 2019 survey had estimated Ahmedabad’s stray dog population at 2.10 lakh, and officials say the sterilisation drive has helped control the population.The civic body is also conducting a fresh survey to identify unsterilised stray dogs across the city as part of its plan to make Ahmedabad rabies-free by 2030.Meanwhile, AMC data shows a rise in animal bite cases.
Dog bite cases increased by 20.8% during January-March 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, rising from 20,115 to 24,203 cases. Cat bite cases increased by 155.7%, while monkey bite cases rose by 44.7% during the same period.
