The Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has requested the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to extend the July 31 deadline for filing non-audit income tax returns (ITR-1 and ITR-2) for the 2026–27 assessment year by at least 15 days, citing widespread disruption caused by heavy monsoon rains across Gujarat.
In its representation to the CBDT, the chamber said the request was made on behalf of taxpayers, tax professionals, and the business community, as severe weather has disrupted normal life across many parts of the state.
GCCI highlighted that heavy rainfall, flash floods, and waterlogging have affected daily activities. It noted that Ahmedabad received 294.6 mm of rainfall in 24 hours on July 23, leading to evacuations and the deployment of disaster response teams.
The chamber also pointed to prolonged power cuts and poor internet connectivity, especially in Tier-2, Tier-3, and rural areas, which have made it difficult for taxpayers to complete their filings. In addition, it cited recurring technical issues on the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal, including slow performance, timeouts, and errors in AIS, TIS, and Form 26AS.
While taxpayers filing non-audit ITR-3 and ITR-4 have already been given an extension until August 31, GCCI has urged the CBDT to provide similar relief to those filing ITR-1 and ITR-2.
CA Jainik Vakil, Chairman of the GCCI Direct Tax Committee, said that a 15-day extension would help make up for working days lost due to the ongoing monsoon and allow taxpayers to file their returns accurately and without unnecessary pressure.
