The Gujarat government has appointed senior professor Jagdish Joshi as the in-charge Vice-Chancellor of Gujarat University, shortly after the three-year term of Vice-Chancellor Neerja Gupta ended on Tuesday.
The appointment, announced late at night, ended speculation over who would lead the university after Gupta completed her tenure.
Normally, the process of selecting a new vice-chancellor begins three to six months before the incumbent’s term ends with the formation of a search committee. However, the delay in setting up the committee had led to speculation that Gupta’s tenure could be extended. As her term ended without any announcement, uncertainty remained over the university’s leadership.
Joshi, a senior professor at the university’s Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC), will serve as the in-charge Vice-Chancellor until further orders or for a maximum of 12 months. He had also served in the same role for a brief period in October 2023.
