A woman lost her life and several others were injured after a luxury car allegedly went out of control and rammed into pedestrians and vehicles near Garibnagar Crossroads in Ahmedabad’s Bapunagar area on Monday. Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver suffered a sudden epileptic seizure, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.The accident took place near the busy Garibnagar Crossroads under the jurisdiction of the H Traffic Police Station. CCTV footage of the incident, which has surfaced online, shows the speeding car veering off its path before crashing into people and vehicles along the roadside.
According to police, the vehicle was travelling from the Ajit Mill side when the driver, identified as 40-year-old Mayankkumar Deepakbhai Patel, reportedly experienced a seizure while driving. Investigators believe the medical emergency led to a loss of control over the steering, resulting in the car ploughing into unsuspecting road users.The collision proved fatal for Rehenuma Khan, daughter of Sufiyankhan Pathan, who sustained severe injuries and died on the spot before medical assistance could reach her.
At least six other people were injured in the crash. The victims, who were either walking along the road or passing through the junction, were rushed to Asarwa Civil Hospital for treatment. Hospital officials said some of the injured required admission, while others were treated for minor injuries and discharged.The accident also caused significant damage to property. An autorickshaw and at least four two-wheelers were badly damaged after being struck by the car. Eyewitnesses described the impact as extremely severe, leaving the vehicles mangled on the road.Residents rushed to help the injured and informed the police and emergency services immediately after the incident.
Traffic and local police personnel reached the spot, secured the area and assisted ambulance teams in shifting the injured to hospital.Police have collected CCTV footage from nearby establishments to reconstruct the sequence of events. Preliminary examination of the footage appears to support the driver’s claim that he suffered a seizure before the crash, though investigators said the exact cause will be determined after a detailed probe.
Authorities are also examining the driver’s medical history and awaiting medical reports to ascertain whether the accident was solely the result of a medical emergency or if other factors contributed to the incident.
A case has been registered and further investigation is underway. Police said statements of eyewitnesses are being recorded, while a forensic examination of the vehicle will also be conducted as part of the inquiry.The crash led to heavy traffic congestion in the area for some time. Normal traffic movement was restored after the damaged vehicles were cleared from the road.
