Train delays, particularly during the monsoon season, are a common challenge for railway passengers across India. While some disruptions are brief, others can stretch for several hours, causing inconvenience and uncertainty for travellers.
However, many passengers are unaware that the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) provides complimentary meals to passengers on select premium trains when delays exceed certain limits.
Under IRCTC’s catering policy, travellers on premium services such as Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express and Duronto Express may be entitled to free refreshments and meals if their train is delayed beyond the prescribed duration. Depending on the timing and length of the delay, passengers may receive breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea or snacks at no additional cost.
The complimentary refreshments generally include tea or coffee served with biscuits. Breakfast and evening snacks may consist of bread and butter, fruit juice and hot beverages. Lunch or dinner typically includes rice, dal, rajma or chole, along with pickle sachets. In some instances, passengers may also be served puris with mixed vegetable curry, accompanied by salt and pepper sachets.
Passengers affected by prolonged delays may also be eligible for ticket refunds. If a train is delayed by more than three hours or is diverted significantly from its scheduled route, travellers can choose not to undertake the journey and apply for a refund. For tickets booked online, refunds are generally credited back to the original payment method, while passengers holding counter tickets must visit the railway station to complete the cancellation process.
Apart from meal assistance and refund provisions, Indian Railways offers several support measures during extended delays. Reserved passengers are often allowed to use station waiting rooms free of charge, food stalls may remain open for longer hours, and additional personnel from the Railway Protection Force may be deployed at major stations to assist passengers and enhance security.
For passengers travelling on premium trains, being aware of these provisions can help make unexpected delays a little more manageable.
