Dhordo Becomes India’s First Fully Solar-Powered Village Under PM Surya Ghar Scheme

Dhordo, a border village in Gujarat’s Kutch district, has become the first village in India to achieve 100% solar electrification under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.

Under the scheme, rooftop solar panels with a total capacity of 185 kilowatts have been installed on all 85 households in the village, making Dhordo completely powered by solar energy.

Officials said the solar systems are expected to generate more than three lakh units of electricity every year, meeting the village’s energy needs while reducing reliance on conventional power sources.

The project is also expected to provide major financial benefits to residents. With solar power covering their electricity needs, households are likely to save on power bills and earn additional income by selling surplus electricity back to the grid.

According to estimates, the village could receive annual economic benefits of more than ₹14 lakh through electricity savings and earnings from excess power generation.

Dhordo, which is already well known as a gateway to the Rann of Kutch and a popular tourist destination, is now being showcased as a national model for clean energy adoption and sustainable rural development.

Officials said the success of the project could encourage other villages across the country to adopt renewable energy solutions and move towards energy self-sufficiency.
