More than 130 grant-in-aid schools in Ahmedabad have received final notices for not returning extra grant money.
Around 133 schools have been asked by the District Education Officer (DEO) to repay about ₹2.9 crore that they received in excess. Officials said that despite several reminders, these schools have not returned the extra amount.
Government grants are given to aided schools every year based on student numbers, and accounts are checked at the end of the financial year. If a school gets more money than required, it must return the extra amount.
Records show that at least 14 schools owe between ₹5 lakh and ₹62.6 lakh each. Jay Somnath School has the highest pending amount of about ₹62.5 lakh.
The DEO has told all schools to pay the dues quickly and submit proof of payment. Schools that have already paid must also provide receipts.
Officials warned that stricter action will be taken now. If schools still do not pay, the education department may ask the district collector to take legal action, including putting a lien on school properties to recover the money.
