The National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, has asked its former director, Praveen Nahar, to pay ₹13.91 lakh for expenses related to his official residence during his tenure from June 2019 to October 2024. The amount includes ₹12.89 lakh for cleaning and housekeeping services and ₹1.02 lakh for electricity charges.
The institute has described these facilities as “beyond entitlement” for the director’s post. The demand was reportedly conveyed through two emails sent about four months ago by Chief Administrative Officer P. S. Pradeep, seeking immediate payment with approval from higher authorities.
Nahar, who resigned in the second half of 2025 and later joined IIT Gandhinagar as a professor of design, said he was surprised by the demand. He added that he has sought clarification on the applicable rules and the basis for the recovery.
