Auto-rickshaw fares in Ahmedabad could soon increase, as driver unions have proposed a revision in rates citing rising fuel and operating costs.
The Auto Rickshaw Drivers Welfare Association has suggested raising the minimum fare for the first 1.2 km from ₹20 to ₹30. It has also proposed increasing the per-kilometre charge from ₹15 to ₹20.
According to the association, the hike is necessary due to increasing expenses such as higher CNG prices, costlier vehicles and spare parts, as well as rising maintenance, labour, fitness and permit charges.
The union has also indicated that drivers may start charging the revised fares unofficially until formal approval is granted.
If implemented, the fare hike could impact daily commuters, especially middle-income groups who depend heavily on auto-rickshaws. Authorities have not yet responded to the proposal.
