In just two years, over 13,000 agricultural plots in the Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar districts have been transformed into non-agricultural land. This information was shared during a recent session of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly.
According to the assembly’s data, a total of 13,127 plots received approval for conversion into residential, industrial, and other developmental uses. The rapid urbanization in these districts is causing land prices to soar. Farmers are feeling the pinch; many are opting to sell their land due to falling crop prices and lackluster support.
During this period, authorities reported receiving a staggering 26,791 applications—17,341 from Ahmedabad and another 9,450 from Gandhinagar—for land conversion permissions. Of those requests, officials approved 9,070 applications in Ahmedabad and cleared 4,097 in Gandhinagar.
A closer look at Ahmedabad district reveals that Sanand led the way with 2,409 conversions. The surge here aligns with ongoing industrial projects like the anticipated Gujarat Semiconductor Hub. Dholera also saw significant activity; there were 1,220 plots converted there as part of the Dholera Special Investment Region initiatives.
In Gandhinagar district itself, city officials processed the most conversions from within its boundaries—2,274 applications were greenlit. As both districts continue their development push, questions about future agricultural viability linger.
