Gujarat Technological University Announces Major Changes for Engineering Students

Gujarat Technological University Announces Major Changes for Engineering Students

Gujarat Technological University (GTU) is shaking things up for over 1.25 lakh Bachelor of Engineering (BE) students. Starting July 2026, students can opt for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) from their fifth semester onwards.

Previously, students could only take MOOCs under a fast-track system during the first four semesters and then select electives starting in semester five. Now, with this new policy, they’ll have that flexibility right from semester five. According to university officials, this change aims to lessen the academic burden on students.

But that’s not all—GTU also announced it will conduct its own exams for students who fail online MOOC tests offered by platforms like SWAYAM and NPTEL. This gives those struggling a chance to pass without having to revert back to traditional offline subjects.

The decisions stemmed from an academic council meeting held on Tuesday at GTU’s campus. In addition to the MOOC changes, the council approved a two-credit societal internship program. This initiative requires BE students to identify social issues and propose solutions within two weeks of starting their internships.

Also noteworthy is the issuance of diploma equivalence certificates for 70 personnel from the EME corps, as approved during the same meeting.
