Extreme weather conditions have prompted authorities in Ahmedabad to roll out a new Heat Action Plan aimed at reducing health risks associated with high temperatures. Starting soon, the city will close around 70 major traffic signals from noon to 4 PM, focusing on busy intersections where heat exposure can be most severe.
This change means commuters won’t be forced to stop at red lights during the hottest part of the day, allowing for smoother travel across the city. “This is about making it easier for people to get around safely in this extreme heat,” an official explained.
In addition to signal closures, Green Net organisations will set up CCTV cameras and other heat-relief measures at these key locations. City parks will also extend their hours, now open from 6 AM until 11 PM, and drinking water facilities will be made available for visitors.
To further combat dehydration, over 350 spots throughout Ahmedabad—including social venues and temples—will offer drinking water. Additionally, public transport hubs like AMTS and BRTS stations will provide easy access to hydration options. Authorities are even distributing ORS packets to help keep residents hydrated during this intense heatwave.
The plan aims not only to safeguard public health but also enhance overall comfort as temperatures continue to rise in the region.
