Medical colleges will now be required to verify the exact number of seats approved for them before proceeding with postgraduate admissions.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) issued the directive after reports of seat duplication and admission irregularities under the All India Quota (AIQ).
According to the NMC, some colleges were approved for a fixed number of AIQ seats, but discrepancies during the admission process resulted in more students being admitted than permitted, or multiple candidates being allotted the same seat. The regulator has warned that colleges will be held accountable if admissions exceed or fall short of the approved intake.
During the third round of admissions, the NMC continued to grant approval for new AIQ seats to several medical colleges. Admission committee officials said that such seats are usually added to the existing seat matrix, with the total intake revised accordingly. However, in this instance, the reopening of the admission portal after approvals led to confusion over filled and vacant seats.
