The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has launched an investigation into several chemical factories in Gujarat’s Vapi and Ahmedabad following the seizure of around 2,900 kg of ammonium nitrate from a doctor in Haryana’s Faridabad.
Officials said the seized ammonium nitrate — a key ingredient used in explosives — was recovered along with about 5 kg of metal from two suspects, Mohammad Shakeel and Ahmed Rather, believed to have terror links.
Preliminary findings suggest that the chemicals were allegedly sourced from manufacturing units in Vapi and Ahmedabad. Acting on this lead, NIA teams conducted raids across multiple factories in both cities on Wednesday.
Sources said the units under investigation are suspected of illegally producing and distributing ammonium nitrate without valid documentation or batch numbers. Investigators suspect that the material may have been diverted for terror-related purposes, posing a significant threat to public safety.
The NIA is currently examining production logs, transportation records, and supplier networks to trace the full chain of illegal procurement and distribution.
